Creating a clear path to net-zero emissions from operations
Our plan is ambitious, but it’s achievable. We’ll get there with collaboration, dedication and investment.
Climate change is a critical challenge, and the oil sands industry has an essential role to play in reducing emissions. Our path to net-zero emissions from operations will help our country achieve a sustainable future.KENDALL DILLING, PRESIDENT, PATHWAYS ALLIANCE
The Pathways Alliance vision
Set the foundation
The goal is to reduce carbon dioxide emissions from our operations by 22 million tonnes annually.
Expand and improve
Increase carbon capture and storage and invest more in alternative power sources.
Invest and develop
Explore and develop existing and emerging technology, including small modular reactors.
The path to net zero begins with carbon capture and storage (CCS)
Our proposed CCS network will capture 10 to 12 million tonnes of carbon dioxide.
What we’re working on
Even though the plan to reach our net-zero goal will take time, we’re committed to making steady progress.
With anticipated co-funding from governments, our member companies plan to invest $24.1 billion by 2030.
Twelve feasibility studies have already been completed at oil sands facilities.
70+ technology projects
We’re currently studying and advancing 70+ technology projects.
Between 2012 and 2021, our member companies invested more than $10 billion in research and development for various technologies. Some of those helped reduce per-barrel CO₂ emissions by an average of about 22% between 2011 and 2019, according to the Government of Alberta.
