Al Reid, Director of The Oil Sands Pathways to Net Zero Alliance, issued the following statement in support of the Government of Alberta’s commitment to carbon capture and storage in this week’s budget:

“We are encouraged by the support for the Pathways Alliance expressed in the Alberta Speech from the Throne on Thursday, and the commitment of four years of funding towards carbon capture and storage in the budget. These actions demonstrate that the Government of Alberta shares our ambition to reduce emissions in the energy sector and the provincial economy. This technology is a vital tool in emissions reduction and will help enable a resilient economy that supports thousands of jobs and industry revenues for the people of Alberta.

“The Pathways Alliance recognizes that climate change is a critical challenge of our time, and our industry has an important role to play in helping our country achieve a sustainable future. That’s why we have developed a detailed multi-decade plan with key short-term steps to ensure immediate progress on reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions so we can achieve our goal of net zero emissions from oil sands production by 2050 and beyond.

“This week’s commitment is recognition by the Government of Alberta that industry and governments will need to make significant investments together to make this plan a reality. These investments will enhance the clean technology industry in Canada, creating new jobs while also preserving current energy sector jobs as the industry transitions to net zero energy production.”
