The future of innovation is bright

Students participating in the APEGA Science Olympics in Calgary

Science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education is a critical factor to the future of innovation. If the curiosity and ingenuity of young science fair participants is any indication, the future is very, very bright.

This year, COSIA, the innovation arm of Pathways Alliance, has been actively involved in nine science fairs and science Olympics across the province. Our sponsorship helped send more than 30 teens to the 2024 Canada-wide science fair in Ottawa at the end of May.

From Wood Buffalo to Lethbridge, our team supported young innovators through sponsorship, judging competitions and distributing awards at their regional fairs. No matter where we went, we were delighted by the ideas explored and problems solved by these young scientists.

The students we saw participating in science events across the country are the researchers and innovators of the future, and innovation is at the heart of what we do at Pathways Alliance.

The oil sands are built on a foundation of innovation and have helped us continuously improve since the industry first began commercial production in 1967.

We’ve deployed numerous environmental technologies to improve our performance and there’s more to come.

To get there, we need to be innovators.

That innovation comes from the research being done by hundreds of scientists at our member companies and the many technology developers we work with to investigate new and emerging technologies.

For more than 10 years, COSIA has brought together innovative thinkers in industry, government, science and academia with a focus on collaborative action and innovation in oil sands environmental technology. It’s a collaborative model that has helped increase the pace of improvement in environmental performance.

COSIA partners with industry and innovators in an effort to come up with solutions to industry’s greatest challenges.

After seeing some of the projects across the province, it looks like we’ve got a lot of potential partners in these up-and-coming innovators! We can’t wait to see what game-changing ideas they bring to the table to help advance environmental innovation as oil sands companies work together to provide energy the world needs.
