The oil sands industry, through our innovation arm COSIA, is looking for practical solutions to improve the flow of fluid oil in underground reservoirs that contain a certain flow-inhibiting geological formation. This geological barrier, found throughout the oil sands region, is a series of embedded mud and sand layers called Inclined Heterolithic Strata (IHS).
Industry has trialled a number of potential solutions over the years – with marginal levels of success. Now, Pathways Alliance members are putting out a worldwide call to innovators in all industries and sectors to find the answer to this long-standing challenge.
